Cross Mountain

Proposals:
Cross Mountain National Protection Area
Agencies: BLM
Agency Status: WSA
Counties: Moffat
Nearest City of Town: Craig
Location: along the Yampa River immediately east of Dinosaur National Monument
Description:
Broad and flat-topped, Cross Mountain rises 2,200 feet above the flood plains of the Yampa and Little Snake Rivers. Toward its southern end the Yampa River cuts a 1,000-foot deep gorge through the sedimentary rock, providing a living geology textbook for natural history buffs. The gorge is designated a Colorado Natural Area. Cross Mountain Gorge offers some of the most challenging whitewater boating in the country during spring runoff, and is a good run for novice boaters later in the year when the water level drops.
The CPP National Protection Area proposal excludes a designated motorized route at the southern end of Cross Mountain.
